Guns N’ Roses‘ Greatest Hits album is in some pretty impressive company, chart-wise.
According to Billboard, the best-of package is now in its 400th non-consecutive week on the publication’s Top 200 sales chart. It’s one of only seven albums ever to log that much time on the list. The others are Pink Floyd‘s Dark Side of the Moon at 927 weeks, crooner Johnny Mathis‘ Johnny’s Greatest Hits at 490, the original cast recording of My Fair Lady with 480 weeks, Bob Marley & The Wailers‘ Legend compilation with 471 weeks, Journey‘s Greatest Hits with 462 and Metallica‘s self-titled album, aka “the Black Album,” with 432.
GN’R’s Greatest Hits debuted on the Billboard 200 chart in April 2004 and spent 138 consecutive weeks on the list. It then returned in December 2009, after Billboard decided to allow back-catalog albums to chart on the Top 200. It’s been there on and off ever since.
In other chart news, the May 17 death of Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell has impacted sales of his back catalog. Soundgarden’s Superunknown album rises six spots on the Billboard 200 chart to #32, while the Singles soundtrack — featuring various Seattle artists, including Soundgarden and Chris Cornell as a solo act — returns to the list at #33 in a deluxe reissue edition.
