More2Screen/Eagle Rock FilmsAmerican Valhalla, a new documentary about the making of Iggy Pop‘s 2016 collaborative album with Queen of the Stone Age‘s Josh Homme, Post Pop Depression, will be screened in select North American theaters in the coming weeks. The film, which was co-directed by Homme and photographer Andreas Neumann, will open in a number of Canadian cinemas on June 29 and in several U.S. theaters on July 11.

The movie features intimate footage of Iggy and Josh working on the album with Queen of the Stone Age guitarist Dean Fertita and Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders at secret recording sessions held at Rancho De La Luna studio in Joshua Tree, California. The film includes interviews with Pop and Homme discussing their respect for each other as artists, as well as conversations with the other musicians involved in the project.

The movie also captures the scenes from the tour Pop and Homme mounted in support of Post Pop Depression, as well as the moment — while the trek was being planned — that Iggy finds out about the death of his good friend David Bowie.

In a trailer for American Valhalla, the famed frontman of The Stooges explains his motivation for making an album with Homme.

“I became one of those singers whose career is a slave to his band, and I wanted an emotional escape” says Iggy. “So I decided I had to strike out on my own, live and on record, to see what I was worth.”
