Rounder RecordsThe late Gregg Allman‘s final studio album, Southern Blood, gets its release today, September 8. The founding Allman Brothers Band frontman, who died from liver cancer in May at age 69, recorded the project with his solo backing band at the legendary FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama.

The Southern Blood track list includes songs by some of Allman’s musical friends, past collaborators and heroes, including Bob Dylan, Jerry Garcia, Little Feat‘s Lowell George, Willie Dixon and Jackson Browne, the latter of whom contributes to a version of one of his own tunes, “Song for Adam.” Allman co-wrote the album’s opening track, “My Only True Friend,” with Scott Sharrard, lead guitarist of Gregg’s solo backing band.

Southern Blood will be available in various configurations, including a standard CD, a deluxe CD with two extra tracks and a DVD and a limited-edition colored-vinyl LP. You can watch an exclusive scene from at the making-of documentary featured on the DVD at Allman’s official YouTube channel. The clip includes an interview with producer Don Was and footage of Gregg working on the record in the studio.

As previously reported, in celebration of Southern Blood‘s release, a series of events called “The Midnight Rider’s Rally” will be held at select Harley-Davidson franchises around North America today. The rallies will feature playbacks of the album, local musicians performing Allman’s songs, and CD, LP and DVD giveaways.

Then, on Saturday, an album-release celebration will take place at The Allman Brothers Band Museum at The Big House in Gregg’s hometown of Macon, Georgia. During the sold-out bash, Allman will be presented posthumously with the key to the city, and Macon’s mayor will issue a proclamation declaring that December 8, Gregg’s birthday, will be celebrated annually as “Gregg Allman Day.”
