A Castro Valley Metallica fan wants his home town to honor fallen bassist Cliff Burton.

There was a petition going around Castro Valley thanks to a devoted Metallica fan. Thanks to the efforts of resident Robert Souza, the Castro Valley Municiple Advisory Council have supported his suggestion of honoring February 10th as Cliff Burton Day, which is also his birthday.  The Castro Valley MAC voted 7-0 in favor, and the resolution will now be forwarded to the Alameda County Board of Supervisors.  They will meet on February 6th.

Cliff Burton was Metallica’s bassist, whose work you can hear on albums  from 1983’s Kill ’em All to 1986 ‘s Mater of Puppets.  His life was cut short when Metallica’s tour bus crashed and flipped on it’s side in an ice storm in Sweden.  Cliff was pinned under the bus and pronouced dead at the scene .

Cliff Burton had a special way with the bass, and was sought out by guitarist James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich because of his unique way of using a wah-wah peddle with the bass. Burton’s finest  composition is “Orion”, an instrumental on Master Of Puppets that he co-wrote with two bass solos in it that sound like guitars. The band was in mourning  for many years, but in 2006, they began playing ” Orion” regularly, in deference to Cliff Burton.  James Hetfield has the bass part for the middle of the song tattooed on the inside of his arm.

You too can add your name to the petition to ensure Metallica’s bassist, Cliff Burton, get’s his day on February 10th!
