Eagle Rock Entertainment/Republic RecordsThe new John Mellencamp concert film and documentary that premiered last month on Netflix is now set to be released as a home video May 11. Plain Spoken: From the Chicago Theatre, which focuses on an October 2016 performance that the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer gave at the famed Windy City venue, will be available as a DVD/CD and a Blu-ray/CD set, and on digital formats.
In addition to footage from the concert, the video features narration from Mellencamp discussing growing up in the Midwest, the ups and downs of his career, and his musings on life in general. The show, which took place during John’s tour in support of his 2014 album Plain Spoken, featured Mellencamp and his band performing several selections from that record, a couple tunes from his 2017 follow-up, Sad Clowns & Hillbillies, along with plenty of his classic hits.
Carlene Carter, the late Johnny Cash‘s stepdaughter, was Mellencamp’s special guest at the concert, and went on to collaborate with John on Sad Clowns & Hillbillies.
The Plain Spoken: From the Chicago Theatre DVD and Blu-ray also offer a “non-commentary” option where you can watch the concert without Mellencamp’s narration. The CD included in the packages features audio of the full performance.
