ABC/Randy HolmesSoundgarden drummer Matt Cameron has posted a tribute to his late band mate Chris Cornell on the one-year anniversary of his death.

“Can’t believe it’s already been one year since I lost my musical soulmate and special friend Chris Cornell,” Cameron writes in an Instagram post.

In the post, Cameron also writes about his first audition for Soundgarden in 1986.

“The tune had kind of a long intro, it sounded great and then all of a sudden Chris starts singing the verse,” he remembers. “I was instantly blown away by the impact of his voice and I felt myself settling into the band on my first try. It was all because of that mind-blowing voice.”

Cameron got the job as soon as they finished the song.

“I will forever praise [Cornell] for the decades of encouragement he gave me and for the fierce friendship we forged,” Cameron writes. “I love you buddy.”

Cornell’s family will be holding a public vigil to mark the one-year anniversary tonight at Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles.
