As part of the event, which PBS will air live from the West lawn of the U.S. Capitol starting at 8 p.m. ET, The Beach Boys will be honored with the prestigious National Artistic Achievement Award.  The group will be the fifth-ever recipient of the honor, joining Stevie Wonder, Gloria Estefan, Reba McEntire, and conductor and Star Wars composer John Williams.

“This is an extraordinary recognition for our band,” says founding Beach Boys singer Mike Love. “We are grateful to everyone involved with A Capitol Fourth for this beautiful honor. The Beach Boys have been synonymous with 4th of July and performing on the West Lawn for decades now. It is an enormous source of pride.”

Appropriately enough, the award will be presented by A Capitol Fourth host John Stamos, who’s been a friend and an occasional touring member of The Beach Boys for decades.

Meanwhile, The Beach Boys kick off a new North American summer trek dubbed the “Now and Then” tour tonight in Springfield, Illinois. The outing is mapped out all the way into the fall. Stamos will join the group on select dates beginning in June.

While the band is out on the road, the recently reported album The Beach Boys with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra will hit stores June 8. It’s a 19-track collection featuring archival vocal performances paired with new symphonic parts recorded at London’s Abbey Road Studios.
