Credit: Myrna SuarezThe charity WhyHunger will present John Mellencamp with its ASCAP Harry Chapin Humanitarian Award at the organization’s 20th annual WhyHunger Chapin Awards, taking place June 5 at City Winery in New York. The singer/songwriter will be recognized for his work helping U.S. family farmers as a co-founder of Farm Aid.
The Harry Chapin Humanitarian Award is given to artists who’ve shown a commitment to supporting social justice and who’ve made significant contributions to fighting global hunger.
“From his advocacy to his work with Farm Aid, John has continuously been a voice for promoting sustainable farming practices aimed at supporting farmers and their communities,” says WhyHunger executive director Noreen Springstead.
“We are thrilled to recognize John. Not only does he embody the artist activist legacy of the Chapin Awards, but his decades-long work to help build a just food system aligns well with WhyHunger’s mission to ensure the right to nutritious food for all.”
WhyHunger was co-founded by late folk-rock singer/songwriter Harry Chapin in 1975. Previous recipients of the award include Harry Belafonte, Pete Seeger, Barbra Streisand, Yoko Ono, Tom Morello, Jackson Browne, Judy Collins, Emmylou Harris, Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, Michael McDonald, Peter, Paul & Mary and Kenny Rogers.
Meanwhile, Mellencamp continues his current tour, dubbed “The John Mellencamp Show,” with a concert tonight in Kansas City, Missouri. The Rock & Roll Hall of Famer is supporting his latest album, the covers compilation Other People’s Stuff.
