ABC/Rick CartwrightThe Who‘s Roger Daltrey has apologized for using profanity during a recent interview he and Pete Townshend gave to the U.K.’s Sky News. During the interview, which was organized to promote The Who’s July 6 concert at London’s Wembley Stadium, the singer became annoyed when he was asked if he thought Brexit — that is, the U.K.’s exit from the European Union — would have a negative effect on British music.
Daltrey, who’s a vocal Brexit supporter, shot back, “No. What’s it got to do with the rock business?”
When the interviewer followed by asking, “How are you gonna tour in Europe?” Roger responded, “Oh dear, as if we didn’t tour in Europe before the f****** [European Union]. Oh, give it up!”
He added, while walking away, “If you want to sign up to be ruled by a f****** mafia, you do it. [It’s] like being governed by [the corruption-plagued soccer organization] FIFA.”
Earlier this week, Daltrey posted a message on TheWho.com that reads, “In the interview which Pete and I did with Sky News…at Wembley Stadium, we ended the interview with me unfortunately using the F-Word when discussing Brexit for which I wholeheartedly apologise.”
Politics aside, the interview also saw Roger discussing why he loves singing the songs that Townshend writes.
“[T]here’s something about climbing into his music for me as the portal that communicates it with people,” Daltrey explained. “I never feel more alive than when I’m doing that — it’s absolute freedom.”
Daltrey also said, “The chemistry between us musically when we’re on stage, it’s telepathic. There’s something in the air that is intangible…It can turn on a dime without even looking at each other…It’s magical.”
