Hey guys... some exciting news! "Under the Rising Sun" has just made the SEMIFINALS in the 2010 Final Draft "Big Break" Screenplay Competition!
Out of over 3,500 entries, my script made the quarterfinals a few weeks ago, which put me in the running with 220 other scripts that also advanced. I was excited, but I knew the semifinals would be tougher... WAY tougher. They only select the TOP 20 of the 221 quarterfinalists to move to the semifinals. Judging is done by top professionals at this point... directors, producers, screenwriters. I was hopeful, but...
And then I got the confirmation today that my screenplay did, indeed, advance to the semifinals!
Top 20 semifinalists in "Big Break" have sold or optioned scripts and/or have garnered representation from agencies like CAA. It's great to get this kind of validation from one of the better competitions out there.
I'm one pretty happy camper right ...

I don't know about you, but how many days in the past week have you had to stop and wonder what month it was? We actually had the heater on last night. Feels like November! C'mon, Summer! I know you're hiding out there somewhere...

I won.
I'm still numb. I know it's real, and yet it feels unreal.
Yesterday, Sunday March 28th, my screenplay was declared the winner of the 2010 Northern California Screenwriters Script Competition at the Silverado Resort in Napa, California.
I was approached by executives from production companies, including Lifetime and Silver Heart Productions. A representative from CAA (Creative Artists Agency) in Los Angeles took my contact information.
My screenplay was based on my book "Through My Mother's Eyes," the story of my mother and her family's life as prisoners of the Imperial Japanese Army during WWII in the Philippines.
And the best part was, my mom was there to see the whole thing.
I only had to write the story. She had to live it. Thank you, Mom.
