Eric Clapton auctioning off 150 guitars!
News blurb from Premiere:
Today in New York, Eric Clapton will hold his third auction of some of his guitars to raise money for his Crossroads Center, the rehab facility he built on the Caribbean island of Antigua. More than 150 lots of guitars, amps and memorabilia will be put up for bids by Bonhams. Clapton will not be on hand, since he wraps up his first leg of North American dates tonight in Los Angeles.
At the last auction, in 2004, Clapton's black Fender, which he named Blackie, set a record when it sold for $959,000, and his Gibson ES 355 sold for $847,000. In 1999, at the first auction, more than 100 guitars were sold, raising more than $5 million for Crossroads. The 1956 Fender Stratocaster he nicknamed Brownie went for $450,000.
Clapton has replaced many of the guitars he has sold, telling us, "I'll always collect and I'll always clean house." --Sal Cirrincione
