Timothy Hiatt/Getty ImagesIn the wake of founding Allman Brothers Band frontman Gregg Allman‘s death on Saturday, many of his former band mates have posted tributes to the music icon on their social media sites.
Founding Allman Brothers singer/guitarist Dickey Betts, who played with the group until 2000, writes, “I’m so glad I was able to have a couple good talks with him before he passed…It’s a very sad thing. I…pass along my deepest sympathies to Gregg’s family, friends, and fans.”
Warren Haynes, who played guitar with the Allman Brothers from 1989 until the band’s 2014 breakup, penned a lengthy homage to Gregg praising Allman’s “angelic voice” and “amazing songs,” while noting, “I am truly honored to have been fortunate enough to have written many songs with him and equally honored to have traveled the world with him while making the best music the world has ever known. I will never, ever take that for granted. And on top of all that — he was my dear friend.”
Chuck Leavell, who played keyboards with the Allmans from 1972 to 1976 and now tours with The Rolling Stones, says in his tribute, “Thank you, Gregg…for your inspiration, for your talent, for your loyal friendship and for the amazing human being you are. I am forever grateful for my relationship with you, for sharing the stage with you so many times, for the honor of recording with you on some records that have stood the test of time. You will always be my hero and I am your biggest fan.”
Longtime Allman Brothers bassist Oteil Burbridge writes, “[Gregg’s] songs never got old. You didn’t outgrow them, you grew into them more fully.”
Ex-Allman Brothers guitarist Jack Pearson writes, “Thank you so much for your music and friendship Gregory, Love you brother.”
