Michael Ochs Archives/Getty ImagesA previously unseen film titled The Long Way Home, which David Bowie shot in 1973 during his Ziggy Stardust Tour, will get its debut screening this month in conjunction with a memorabilia auction featuring some Bowie-related items.
The movie — which documents a trip Bowie and his friend Geoff MacCormack took from Japan to Moscow during a break on the tour — will be shown daily from June 25 to June 28 in advance of the sale at Bonhams auction house in London.
Bonhams’ June 28 Entertainment Memorabilia sale includes a collection of photos MacCormack snapped of Bowie during their trip, as well as on the set of The Man Who Fell to Earth. Each image was signed by the late rock legend in 2015.
As for the film, it film mixes footage filmed by Bowie with photos taken by MacCormack, who was a singer, percussionist and dancer on tour with David in 1973 and ’74.
“For me, these images, which David loved, almost feel as if they belong in a family album,” MacCormick says of his collection of pics. “They capture the sense of two mates — one of whom just happened to have become a rock star — having the time of their lives.”
Other items being auctioned at the sale include a pair of Turkish-style shoes and a T-shirt Bowie wore in his “Jazzin’ for Blue Jean” video shoot, rare posters, an autographed copy of his Let’s Dance album, a pair of trousers David wore during the filming of Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence, and a lithograph of a 2002 Bowie self-portrait.
