The rehearsal footage demonstrates what the Grammy performance could’ve sounded like, which was infamously hampered by technical problems. As soon as they started playing the Metallica song “Moth into Flame,” frontman James Hetfield‘s microphone did not work, and he eventually had to share mics with Gaga.
Along with the rehearsals, the behind-the-scenes clip shows Gaga and the metal legends bantering and discussing the performance. “This is a tricky one,” the pop star says at one point. “I gotta get this one right, can’t piss off those Metallica fans.”
Metallica recently wrapped up a North American stadium tour in support of their latest album, Hardwired…to Self-Destruct. They’ll kick off a European tour in September, which will stretch all the way into May 2018.
