The memorial was attended by various current and former AC/DC members, including Malcolm’s brother Angus Young, his nephew Stevie Young, singer Brian Johnson, drummer Phil Rudd and, according to RollingStone.com, bassists Cliff Williams and Mark Evans.
Representing the Young family at the service, Malcom’s nephew Bradley Horsburgh talked about the late rocker’s love for soccer and dumb comedy films, and joked about his questionable boating abilities.
“He was famous for rhythm but infamous for boating skills,” quipped Horsburgh, who shared stories about how his uncle was responsible for sinking a sailboat and manning a yacht that caught on fire.
“We could almost blame him personally for rising sea levels caused by too many anchors lost at sea,” joked Bradley.
During the service, Malcolm’s favorite electric guitar was placed on his coffin, and Angus was later seen putting the instrument in his brother’s hearse.
Attendees were given specially made guitar picks paying tribute to Malcolm, and a program that read: “Malcolm’s family thank you for your love, support and overwhelming outpouring of kindness during this sad time. They ask that you remember Malcolm as a man who was generous and had immense talent. His enormous legacy to his family and the music industry worldwide will never be forgotten.”
News.com.au reports that a Scottish pipe band played a few bars of AC/DC’s “It’s a Long Way to the Top” as Malcom’s hearse pulled away from the church.
Hundreds of AC/DC fans lined the streets outside of the cathedral to pay their respects to the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer. Malcolm died on November 18 of complications from dementia. He was 64.
