The Doors’ Isle of Wight performance was the last major show by the band to be filmed prior to frontman Jim Morrison‘s death in July 1971. The festival, which took place in August of 1970 and was attended by more than 600,000 people, also featured Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Miles Davis, Joni Mitchell, The Moody Blues, Sly and the Family Stone, Emerson, Lake & Palmer and many others.
The Doors began their set at 2 a.m. and played on a stage that was lit by just a red spotlight. Among the songs the band played were “Roadhouse Blues,” “Break On Through (to the Other Side),” “When the Music’s Over,” “Light My Fire,” and an extended version of “The End.” The concert footage, most of which is previously unreleased, has been restored using the latest technology, while the audio was mixed from the original multi-track tapes by longtime Doors engineer and producer Bruce Botnick.
The video portion of the release includes a bonus featurette titled This Is The End that includes archival interviews with Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek, guitarist Robby Krieger and manager Bill Siddons that were conducted by Oscar-winning filmmaker Murray Lerner, who shot the original footage. The featurette also includes clips from a 2002 interview with Manzarek.
