Experience Hendrix/Legacy Recordings

Experience Hendrix/Legacy RecordingsThe new Jimi Hendrix album Both Sides of the Sky, which features previously unreleased studio recordings dating from between early 1968 and early 1970, hit stores today.

In conjunction with 13-track collection’s arrival, a video for one of the unreleased tunes, “Lover Man,” has premiered on Hendrix’s official VEVO YouTube channel.  The clip combines archival performance footage, candid film clips and photos of Hendrix, along with colorful psychedelic animation.

“Lover Man” is a blistering blues-rock song that Jimi recorded in New York City in 1969 with his Band of Gypsys group mates, drummer Buddy Miles and bassist Billy Cox. The tune features Hendrix playfully throwing in a segment of the “Batman Theme.”

Both Sides of the Sky includes many tracks featuring the Band of Gypsys lineup, and one song, “Hear My Train A Comin’,” by the original Jimi Hendrix Experience with drummer Mitch Mitchell and bassist Noel Redding.

One of the most interesting highlights is a cover of Joni Mitchell‘s “Woodstock” featuring Hendrix’s friend Stephen Stills and Miles, recorded before Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young did their classic version of the tune.

The album also boasts a rendition of the Stills-penned “$20 Fine” that features Stephen on lead vocals and organ, along with Hendrix, Mitchell and pianist Duane Hitchings.

“Georgia Blues” reunites Jimi with singer/sax player Lonnie Youngblood, a member of Henrdrix’s pre-Experience group Curtis Knight & the Squires.

In addition, Both Sides of the Sky includes the previously unavailable full version of a cover of Guitar Slim‘s “Things I Used to Do” featuring Johnny Winter, Cox and CSNY drummer Dallas Taylor.

Longtime Hendrix engineer Eddie Kramer co-produced the new album.
