To back up a bit, Mayer, who plays in the Grateful Dead spinoff group Dead & Company, recently posted an Instagram photo of himself alongside Dead drummer Mickey Hart and NBA legend Bill Walton, who happens to be a big Deadhead.
Seeing an opportunity, Love commented on the post that her “insane” father Hank Harrison, who “briefly managed” the pre-Dead band The Warlocks, had told her that Lesh was her godfather.
“It may be true,” Love wrote. “Will you find out? I was too shy to ask in Albany once on tour. Maybe he’s not. I don’t know.”
She adds that she’ll buy Mayer a “nice Rolex” if he comes through. Mayer is a well-known watch collector.
Actress and singer Rita Wilson, a.k.a. Mrs. Tom Hanks, replied to Love’s comment by writing, “That’s a really good story.”
While Mayer obviously does have Grateful Dead connections, Lesh actually doesn’t play with Dead & Company, which may make his task more difficult.
While Love’s relationship with Lesh remains unclear, we do know that she’ll be a guest performer at tonight’s Smashing Pumpkins 30th anniversary show in Holmdel, New Jersey.
