The clip premiered Thursday on TheAtlantic.com and Rhino Records’ YouTube channel. Graham Nash, who wrote the song, collaborated on the video with artist and animator Jeff Scher.
The video begins in black-and-white with animated depictions of such historic events as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.‘s 1963 March on Washington, the medal-podium protests of black athletes at the 1968 Summer Olympics and the 1970 shooting of anti-war protesters at Ohio’s Kent State University.
Changing over to color, the clip then portrays various modern protests, including Parkland, Florida student activist Emma Gonzalez at the 2018 March for Our Lives in D.C.; Black Lives Matter marches; quarterback Colin Kaepernick and other football players taking a knee during the National Anthem; and people protesting the separation of undocumented immigrant children from their parents.
“I wrote ‘Teach Your Children’ because we have much to teach them. Conversely, I believe we as parents have much to learn from them as well,” says Nash about his song. “I think that Jeff Scher did a wonderful job of animating my lyrics and positioning the song in a contemporary setting.”
“Teach Your Children” originally appeared on CSNY’s debut album, Déjà Vu. The song reached #16 on the Billboard Hot 100. The track’s also featured on the new Nash compilation, Over the Years…, and so is a demo version that Graham recorded in 1969.
