Mason tells ABC Radio that he’s pleased that the long-out-of-print albums are available again, noting that he’s proud of them and that they’ve been “out of sight for far too long.”
Fictitious Sports was recorded while Pink Floyd was finishing work on The Wall. The album features tunes written by jazz composer and pianist Carla Bley, who also played keyboards on it, while ex-Soft Machine singer/drummer Robert Wyatt contributed lead vocals.
Mason recalls that the project was “great fun,” adding, “[L]istening to it again, I thought it’s still really quite contemporary, and still, I have to say, very funny.”
Profiles is a mostly instrumental collection that Nick says “was driven by the fact that Rick and I had worked together on a whole bunch of bits and pieces,” including short documentary films and advertising jingles. The album includes a song called “Lie for a Lie” featuring vocals by Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour.
“I just called [David] up and [asked] would he do it and he said, ‘Yeah, sure,'” Nick remembers. “Came and did it, probably took him 10 minutes, and we moved on.”
Finally, the White of the Eye soundtrack accompanied a thriller directed by British maverick filmmaker Donald Cammell.
“[I]t’s a fairly…dark movie,” Mason maintains, “but it was a great vehicle for us to be able to put music to.”
Unattended Luggage is available as a three-CD set, a three-LP vinyl package and digitally.
