Legacy RecordingsSantana is celebrating a few major milestones this year — the 50th anniversary of the band’s debut album and historic performance at Woodstock, and the 20th anniversary of its hugely successful comeback album Supernatural and its lead single, “Smooth.”

“Smooth,” which was released in June of 1999, featured guest lead vocals by Matchbox Twenty frontman Rob Thomas, who tells ABC Radio that he and Carlos Santana are trying to schedule a show together to celebrate the anniversary while both are out on the road this year.

“I was actually just on the phone with him a few nights ago,” Thomas reveals. “We want to connect somewhere on the West Coast [or] East Coast. Like, on a day that I have off, I’ll just come and open up for him when we’re in the same place.”

“Smooth,” which Thomas co-wrote with composer Itaal Shur, spent 12 consecutive weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, spanning from October 1999 to January 2000.

The song also won a trio of Grammy Awards — Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals — and is ranked by Billboard as the second most successful song of all time.
