In April, Nils Lofgren released a new solo album titled Blue with Lou, which includes new recordings of several unreleased songs he co-wrote with Lou Reed in the late 1970s that he’s currently supporting with a U.S. tour.  But the longtime E Street Band member also has been working on a what he describes as a “beautiful” new record with Neil Young and his backing band, Crazy Horse.

The project came about after Lofgren rejoined Crazy Horse, with whom he played during the 1970s, for several shows last year.

“We’d done [some] spot shows that were beautiful, and talked about maybe doing some more shows in the fall, late summer,” Nils explains to ABC Radio. “But then out of the blue, [Neil] called and said, ‘Look, I’ve been writing all these new songs. I know you’ve got a record coming out and a tour. Is there any chance you can get up to Colorado to record for a couple of weeks?'”

It was something Lofgren says he “had to do,” so he headed to Colorado for a few weeks in April shortly before launching his solo trek.

“It’s beautiful, as always,” Nils says of the album. “Neil’s one of our great writers. And we may continue the recording in later in summer.”

In late April, Young posted a note about the Crazy Horse album on his website, in which he revealed he hoped to release the album in the fall and support it with a tour.

“Hey, whatever comes, I’ve been blessed,” Lofgren tells ABC Radio about the prospect of playing more with Young and his band.

Nils’ solo tour runs through a June 2 show in Dallas. Here are all of his remaining dates:

5/30 — Austin, TX, 04 Center
5/31 — Houston, TX, The Heights Theater
6/1 — Beaumont, TX, Jazz & Blues Fest — Jefferson Theatre
6/2 — Dallas, TX, The Kessler Theater
