Rhino Entertainment/Trafalgar ReleasingThe ninth annual edition of The Grateful Dead‘s one-night-only “Meet-Up at the Movies” screening event will take place at select theaters on August 1, coinciding with what would have been the late Jerry Garcia‘s 77th birthday.
This year, the event has been expanded to include cinemas around the world, and the concert film that will be shown features a previously unreleased complete performance that took place June 17, 1991, at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
“The Summer Tour of 1991 was widely considered one of the best of the 1990s, and the June 17, 1991 show at Giants Stadium was nearly universally acclaimed as the best of the tour,” notes Grateful Dead archivist and legacy manager David Lemieux. “Now, 28 years later, its mystique is here for everyone to see and hear in the best possible quality.”
Among the well-known songs The Grateful Dead played at the concert were “Truckin’,” “Uncle John’s Band” and “Sugar Magnolia,” but the band’s set also included rarities like “Saint of Circumstance,” “Might as Well” as “New Speedway Boogie.”
The show also featured covers of Bob Dylan‘s “When I Paint My Masterpiece” and, as the finale, The Band‘s “The Weight.” The Dead’s lineup at the time included two keyboardists: Bruce Hornsby and Vince Welnick.
The concert was also significant because it was only one of two during the ’91 tour recorded on 48-track analog tape.
The 2019 “Meet-Up at the Movies” also will include a brief feature hosted by Lemieux revealing details about the limited-edition Grateful Dead box set that will be released this year.
