Noam Galai/Getty ImagesSince R.E.M. broke up in 2011, Michael Stipe has stayed pretty quiet when it comes to making new music, but that’s apparently about to change.

R.E.M.’s website has shared an interview that Stipe did with the Italian publication La Repubblica, in which he says he’s working on new solo material. In fact, he says he has “18 songs…already ready.”

“For five years, I’d had a clean break from music,” Stipe says. “Now I’m writing, composing and recording all by myself and for the first time.”

In March 2018, Stipe shared a 40-second clip of a potential new solo song called “Future, If Future.” Last month, he played some solo material at a surprise New York City set opening for Patti Smith.
