Credit: DH LovelifeNeil Young has offered up a second track in advance of the October 25 release of Colorado, his new studio album with Crazy Horse.
“Rainbow of Colors” resembles a traditional folk hymnal, with lyrics that focus on the racial divisiveness that seems to be plaguing the U.S. lately.
“There’s a rainbow of colors, in the old U.S.A.,” Neil sings, joined by a choir of multi-tracked voices. “No one’s gonna whitewash those colors away/ I know some might tell me, that there’s not room for all/ And they should just go back/to the places they fall.”
In a post on his Neil Young Archives website, Young explains that the song is “about the U.S.A. and the whole world,” adding, “The idea of this song is that we all belong together. Separating us into races and colors is an old idea whose time has passed.”
Young goes on to discuss the importance of people coming together today, particularly to fight climate change.
“We need to all be one because we all are threatened,” he writes. “Climate change is the unifying force we have needed for a long time.”

Young and Crazy Horse also recently premiered another track from Colorado, a gentle love ballad called “Milky Way.”
As previously reported, the vinyl version of Colorado will feature a bonus seven-inch single that includes a solo live version of “Rainbow of Colors” recorded this past May in Portland, Oregon.
