Credit: Ross HalfinZZ Top‘s members recently issued a statement expressing their support for their Houston-area neighbors who have been affected by Hurricane Harvey’s devastation, and now the Texas trio are putting their money where their mouths are.
The Rock & Roll Hall of Famers have partnered with the Smart Financial Centre concert hall in the Houston suburb of Sugar Land, Texas, to donate $100,000 to local organizations aiding the recovery efforts in the wake of the hurricane.
The band, which recently launched a new North American tour leg, is scheduled to perform at Smart Financial Centre on September 10, the first show that will be held at the venue since Harvey hit the Houston area.
“The plan is to stick to our guns, charge ahead and pull the show together the best we can,” frontman Billy Gibbons tells Rolling Stone, adding that the concert will be “a true homecoming in a very real sense.”
The singer/guitarist points out that ZZ Top’s “roots are in Houston,” adding, “This is going to be a very special show for us. We’re hoping that it marks a turning point in the crisis and is a reflection of the indomitable spirit that typifies Texans and Houstonians in particular.”
Gibbons also says it’s been heartening to see how many people have taking part in the relief efforts.
“It says a lot about that Texas spirit that you see so many volunteers jumping in to lend a helping hand,” he tells Rolling Stone. “It could have been a lot worse, in terms of loss of life, but that seems to have been kept to a minimum.”
