Kevin Mazur/WireImageIf you’re fan of Nirvana and/or the comedic stylings of David Spade, then you might’ve come across an eyebrow-raising photo on social media. The photo depicts a mural which is supposed to be a painting of Kurt Cobain, but it’s actually an image of Spade. And yes, the comic is just as confused as you are.
Spade himself shared the photo, writing, “Everyone is sending me this.” He then posted the photo of himself that inspired the mural image. “Picture that was on mural. Why it’s on it who knows,” Spade wrote. “Oh well. I blame that crazy internet.”
As for the “crazy internet” theory, that’s not too far from the truth. The mural was created by Australian artist Lushsux, self-described as “the world’s first meme artist,” so the alleged “mix-up” was actually done on purpose.
In addition to the Spade-as-Cobain image, the mural also attributes the quote “It’s better to burn out than fade away” to the Nirvana frontman. The quote actually originated with Neil Young, who sang it in his song “My My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue).” However, Cobain did use the line in his suicide note.
