Courtesy of Bruce SpringsteenBruce Springsteen kicks off his Springsteen on Broadway residency at New York City’s Walter Kerr Theatre this Tuesday, October 3, and in advance of the premiere performance, The Boss has shared some details about the show with The New York Times. Springsteen tells the newspaper that the engagement, which will see him playing five shows a week through February 3, 2018, “is my first real job, I think.”
Bruce reveals that the run of intimate gigs was inspired by a special acoustic performance he gave at the White House in January as a farewell gift that President Obama and his family arranged for about 250 staff members. For the show, Springsteen put together a career-spanning set and interspersed the songs with spoken-word segments that echoed parts of his 2016 memoir, Born to Run.
Springsteen on Broadway will feature Bruce playing for two hours alone with just some guitars and a baby grand piano.
“I’m going to direct myself onstage and I wrote up the script on my own,” the 68-year-old Rock & Roll Hall of Famer explains. “It’s a pretty basic show. It’s going to feel like a garage workshop basically, and I’m going to play my songs and tell my stories.”
The Boss also points out that unlike his regular concert tours, where he constantly changes the set, the Broadway show “is a locked-in piece of music and script that I’m going to be performing pretty much the same on a nightly basis.”
Springsteen also says that the residency won’t feature much in the way of production, “beyond the stage, some lights and some very high-quality sound.”
In other news, Springsteen tells The New York Times that he’s “finished a record,” which he says emerged from him being “locked into a period of creativity.”
