Interscope RecordsAs the end of the year approaches, Rolling Stone has revealed its picks for the 50 Best Albums of 2017.  They include releases from such veteran acts as U2, Randy Newman, Robert Plant and Bob Dylan.

U2 scored the highest-ranking entry by a veteran artist with their yet-to-be-released Songs of Experience, which lands at #3 behind rapper Kendrick Lamar‘s DAMN at #1 and Lorde‘s Melodrama at #2. “U2’s latest finds the band coming to terms with a world closer to the brink than at any time during their career,” the magazine notes. “They meet the moment with precisely the right balance of grandeur and grace.”

Further down on the tally is Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant‘s latest solo album, Carry Fire, at #32. Rolling Stone writes, “Carry Fire finds Plant nuancing the mystic stomp of yore for darkening times.”

Bob Dylan, meanwhile, finishes in 35th place with the three-disc Triplicate, his third consecutive collection of standards. The magazine notes that Dylan “sings with care and nuance, looking back on past loves and losses with a tone of brooding regret that eventually ebbs into a kind of reluctant acceptance.”

One spot down, at #36, is Fleetwood Mac members Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie‘s self-titled collaborative album, which Rolling Stone says “showcases the effortlessness of pop/rock veterans doing what they do best.”

Also making the list is the late Gregg Allman‘s final album, Southern Blood, which is ranked #41. The magazine points out that while the Allman Brothers Band frontman’s farewell statement is “rich with intimations of mortality, it’s easygoing, too, with a laid-back generosity that recalls Allman’s kindest Seventies work.”

Rounding out the tally is Concrete and Gold by Foo Fighters, which, perhaps surprisingly, only managed to make #49. The publication calls the album “classic rock from a punk who never stopped believing.”
