Brantley GutierrezFoo Fighters have been booked as the musical guest on the December 16 installment of Saturday Night Live, but the band and Dave Grohl have been on so many times that they might as well be regular cast members.
According to NBC, this will be Foo Fighters’ seventh time on SNL as a musical guest. The only other rock band that’s been on the show more often as a musical guest has been Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers.
But the December 16th episode will mark Grohl’s 13th appearance overall, according to NBC. That counts his appearances with Foo Fighters, with Nirvana, and as a special guest playing with Mick Jagger and, coincidentally, Tom Petty.
Kevin Hart will host the episode with Foo Fighters.
In other SNL news, U2 is the musical guest for this weekend’s edition of the show. It’s only their fourth time performing on the show, which is surprising given their long history.
By the way, the music act who’s appeared the most on Saturday Night Live is Paul Simon. He’s been on 18 times, according to NBC, including hosting, performing and making special cameo appearances. No doubt part of the reason is because he and SNL creator and executive producer, Lorne Michaels, are longtime friends.
