Manticore RecordsA new limited-edition concert album recorded during Emerson, Lake & Palmer frontman Greg Lake‘s final tour has just been released. Live in Piacenza captures a November 2012 performance at Teatro Municipale in the Italian city of Piacenza as part of Lake’s “Songs of a Lifetime” trek.
The show featured Greg playing a variety of ELP’s best-loved songs, including “From the Beginning,” “Still…You Turn Me On,” “I Believe in Father Christmas,” “Lucky Man” and “Karn Evil 9.” It also included performances of tunes from Lake’s pre-ELP stint with King Crimson, “21st Century Schizoid Man” and “In the Court of the Crimson King,” as well as covers of the Elvis Presley hit “Heartbreak Hotel,” The Beatles‘ “You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away” and Curtis Mayfield‘s “People Get Ready.”
Lake was joined for “Lucky Man” by a trio of respected Italian prog-rock musicians — Aldo Tagliapietra, Bernardo Lanzetti and Annie Barbazza.
Live in Piacenza is available on CD, as a premium-audiophile double-LP vinyl collection and as a deluxe box set at ManticoreRecords.com. The box set features a clear-vinyl audiophile double-LP, a gold audiophile CD, a DVD containing a documentary about the concert, and such collectibles as photo prints, a poster and sticker.
In his 2016 memoir Lucky Man, Greg wrote that the Piacenza show was an “outstanding memory” for him. He added, “The show at Teatro Municipale was recorded and I decided to release a special collector’s edition of it on vinyl. Somehow the event, the feeling of the music and the atmosphere all seem to be suited to being reproduced in this analogue way.”
Lake died of lung cancer in December 2016. He was 69.
