ABC/Randy HolmesThe UCLA School of Law is launching the Chris Cornell Scholarship, a $1 million endowment named after the late Soundgarden frontman.
According to a press release, the scholarship “honor’s Cornell’s commitment to justice, human rights and advocacy for those in need.”
“My husband and I agreed that given the opportunity of education, people have the power to change the world,” says Cornell’s widow, Vicky, who leads the coalition funding the scholarship.
“UCLA School of Law is an institution known for its academic excellence and we are proud the Chris Cornell Scholarship will provide funding for future students and future leaders of the world,” she adds.
Last month, Cornell was posthumously honored by the Los Angeles Committee of Human Rights Watch for his song “The Promise,” from the film of the same name about the Armenian genocide. The track is also nominated for Best Rock Performance at the 2018 Grammys.
