Sony/Legacy RecordingsJoe Satriani‘s 16th solo album, What Happens Next, hit stores today. The guitar virtuoso recorded the instrumental collection as a power trio with ex-Deep Purple bassist Glenn Hughes and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith.

Satriani and Smith, of course, also play together in the supergroup Chickenfoot, along with Sammy Hagar and founding Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony. What Happens Next was co-produced by Joe and his longtime collaborator Mike Fraser, whose resume includes recording and mixing every AC/DC album from 1990’s Razor’s Edge through 2014’s Rock or Bust.

Satriani is promoting What Happens Next with a new installment of his guitar-heavy G3 Tour, which kicked off Thursday in Seattle. For the new trek, which is mapped out through a February 25 show in Milwaukee, Joe is joined by Phil Collen of Def Leppard and John Petrucci of Dream Theater. Satriani also has a European leg of the G3 Tour — with Petrucci and ex-Scorpions guitarist Uli Jon Roth — lined up from mid-March to the end of April.
