Matt BaronFollowing Elton John’s announcement Wednesday in New York City that he’ll be wrapping up his touring career with a three-year farewell tour, we now have the full details.
The tour, dubbed Farewell Yellow Brick Road, will kick off September 8 in Allentown, PA, and will include 300 shows across five continents, hitting North America, Europe, Asia, South America and Australasia before wrapping in 2021. Elton says his stage production will take fans on “a musical and highly visual journey spanning a 50-year career of hits like no one has ever seen before.”
“It’s all around the world, every continent you can possibly think of, I’m going to,” Elton said at the press conference. “And it’ll be the best production I’ve ever done, and it’ll be a wonderful way to thank people, and it’s a way of going out with a bang. I don’t want to go out with a whimper, I wanna go out with a big bang. I’m not the sort of guy who’s a whimper-y guy.”
The press conference began with a five-minute long virtual reality presentation that took fans onstage with Elton at his legendary 1970 gig at L.A.’s Troubadour club, with him at Dodger Stadium, into outer space, and then through his entire career. It’s not know if there will be any VR elements as part of the farewell tour staging.
Elton’s partner on the tour is Gucci, which will be providing all of his stage outfits. At the press conference, Elton was sporting a fabulous floral jacket with rhinestone lapels, with “Gucci Loves Elton” spelled out on the back in pearls.
