According to ABC Bay Area affiliate KGO, Castro Valley local Robert Souza spoke to the town’s Municipal Advisory Council earlier this week, and asked them to make the musician’s birthday — February 10 — Cliff Burton Day.

Additionally, Souza has launched a Change.org petition to support the cause.

The MAC Board agreed that Burton’s contributions to the Castro Valley community should be honored, and voted 7-0 in favor of establishing Cliff Burton Day. The next step in making it a reality is a vote from the Alameda County Board of Supervisors, who will meet on the matter February 6.

Burton joined Metallica in 1982 and played on the band’s first three albums: 1983’s Kill ‘Em All, 1984’s Ride the Lightning and 1986’s Master of Puppets. He died in a tour bus accident in September 1986.
