UMe/PolydorA variety of famous singers are featured on an upcoming compilation of Andrew Lloyd Webber‘s most memorable compositions that’s being released to mark the theater legend’s 70th birthday. Andrew Lloyd Webber Unmasked: The Platinum Edition is due out March 16, and will be available as a four-CD set, a two-CD package and in digital formats.
Among the many stars featured on the retrospective are Deep Purple‘s Ian Gillan, Alice Cooper and Elvis Presley.
Webber personally selected all the album’s recordings to reflect songs from his many hit musicals, including Jesus Christ Superstar, Cats, Evita, The Phantom of the Opera, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Sunset Boulevard, Starlight Express and School of Rock. Those productions have grossed nearly $14 billion total worldwide. Tracks on the compilation include selections from original cast recordings, movie soundtracks, concept albums, solo releases and more.
The album features a few songs from the original 1970 Jesus Christ Superstar album, on which Gillan handled the role of Jesus. Cooper’s contribution, meanwhile, is a rendition of “King Herod’s Song” from a 1996 London cast recording of Jesus Christ Superstar. The compilation also includes Presley singing “It’s Easy for You,” a Webber tune that appeared on Elvis’ final studio album, Moody Blue.
Other famous artists who appear on the retrospective include Madonna, The Everly Brothers, Barbra Streisand, Tom Jones, Cliff Richard, Donny Osmond and Beyonce.
Andrew Lloyd Webber Unmasked also features three newly recorded songs: Lana Del Rey singing Evita‘s “You Must Love Me”; ex-Pussycat Dolls singer and X Factor judge Nicole Scherzinger performing “Memory” from Cats; and Gregory Porter singing “Light at the End of the Tunnel,” from Starlight Express.
