Neil Young recently launched a news section on his expansive Neil Young Archives website, NYA Times-Contrarian, where he revealed that some new archival live releases are in the works, as well as some other plans that should excite his fans.
The first release Young discusses is an album dubbed Roxy: Tonight’s the Night Live, recorded in 1973 at the then-new Los Angeles venue The Roxy. Those shows followed the initial sessions for what became his classic album Tonight’s the Night. His band at the time included Nils Lofgren, Ben Keith and Crazy Horse‘s Billy Talbot and Ralph Molina.
“We really knew the Tonight’s the Night songs after playing them for a month, so we just played them again…top to bottom…two sets a night for a few days,” Young explains. “We had a great time.”
Neil says he expects Roxy: Tonight’s the Night Live to be released in March.
Young also reports that another live album called Alchemy is in the works, which will feature high-resolution performances recorded in Europe, Australia and Canada during Crazy Horse’s 2012-2013 Alchemy tour.
“All the songs were picked right after and during the tour,” Neil points out. “These are the ones we like. All that we are doing now is post-production and mastering.”
In other news, Young says NeilYoungArchives.com will soon introduce “Movie Night,” a once-a-week screening of unreleased and rare long-form videos and films from his Shakey Pictures Archives. Among the movies that will be shown: HomeTown, featuring footage from the concert Young played in Omemee, Canada, in December that coincided with the release of his latest studio album, The Visitor.
Meanwhile, Neil also reports that he’s planning a tour “for the latter part of 2018.”
