Days after what would have been the late Layne Staley‘s 51st birthday, his father tells ABC Seattle affiliate KOMO that he thinks DuVall is doing a “wonderful job” singing with the grunge icons.

“I’m pretty biased. I mean, as far as I’m concerned, there isn’t nobody that’s going to match [Layne],” Phil says. “But the group has done a wonderful job, William’s done a wonderful job.”

Layne recorded three studio albums with Alice in Chains before he died in 2002 at age 34. DuVall joined the group in 2006, and his third album with them, Rainier Fog, arrived last week. Phil says that he “couldn’t be prouder” that the band is continuing to tour and make new music.

“I love all those guys, love ’em,” he says. “I still run texts with [guitarist/vocalist] Jerry [Cantrell] and [drummer] Sean [Kinney] on the road.  So we’ve been close, we’re a family.”

Alice in Chains is currently touring the U.S. behind Rainier Fog.
