
Courtesy of Rhino EntertainmentThe expansive Grateful Dead documentary Long Strange Trip: The Untold Story of The Grateful Dead, which aired as a six-part series on Amazon Prime in 2017, will be released on DVD and Blu-ray on November 9.
The standard version of the release will be available as a two-DVD set and a single Blu-ray disc, while a Deluxe Edition, featuring three DVDs or two Blu-rays, will be sold exclusively at Dead.net.
Long Strange Trip was fully sanctioned by The Grateful Dead, and was executive produced by Martin Scorsese. It was directed by Amir Bar-Lev, whose credits include the critically acclaimed doc The Tillman Story. The film features new interviews with the band’s surviving members, as well as family members, friends, collaborators, road crew and fans. It also includes previously unseen concert and behind-the-scenes footage and photos of the group.
All versions of the home video feature the full original documentary, with a new 5.1 surround-sound mix, as well as audio commentary from Bar-Lev and editor John Walter.
The Deluxe Edition includes previously unreleased footage of the full six-song set The Grateful Dead played at its first-ever overseas concert, in May 1970 at the Hollywood Festival at Leycett, U.K., as well as backstage scenes from the event. The deluxe version also boast two bonus live performances from 1989: “Dear Mr. Fantasy” and “Death Don’t Have No Mercy.”
Regarding the footage from the Hollywood Festival, band archivist David Lemieux says, “This is truly some of the most remarkable, candid, and interesting footage in existence of the Grateful Dead and we’re thrilled to be releasing the entirety of this wonderful historical document.”
