BMGA few weeks back, Aerosmith‘s Steven Tyler revealed that he’d recorded a new version of the Rolling Stones classic “Brown Sugar” with Extreme guitarist Nuno Bettencourt at the historic FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Now, Billboard reports that the track will appear on a new star-studded tribute compilation titled Muscle Shoals…Small Town, Big Sound that will be released on September 28.
You can listen to the “Brown Sugar” cover now at RollingStone.com.
The album was put together by late FAME Studios founder Rick Hall‘s son, Rodney, and partner Keith Stegall, and features various artists performing well-known songs that were recorded in Muscle Shoals.
Among the other musicians who contributed to the project are Kid Rock, The Doobie Brothers‘ Tom Johnston, ex-Doobie Brother Michael McDonald, Shinedown singer Brent Smith and country legend Willie Nelson.
Starting Friday, August 30, Tyler and Bettencourt’s rendition of “Brown Sugar” will be made available as a free instant download for those pre-ordering the compilation.
A preview trailer for Muscle Shoals…Small Town, Big Sound has been posted at the album’s official YouTube channel. The clip features footage of Tyler recording “Brown Sugar,” and talking about what makes Muscle Shoals a special place to make music.
“To be here and record in the midst of the vibe and the music that was created here is what I came here for,” Steven says.
The video also includes clips of McDonald singing Etta James‘ “Cry Like a Rainy Day,” Smith belting out Wilson Pickett‘s “Mustang Sally” and country star Alan Jackson crooning a version of The Rolling Stones’ “Wild Horses.”
Part of the money raised from sales of the album will benefit the Grammy Foundation and the Muscle Shoals Music Foundation.
