Courtesy of Shore Fire MediaThe North American leg of the MC50 Tour, a trek organized by founding MC5 guitarist Wayne Kramer to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the making of the influential band’s 1969 debut album, Kick Out the Jams, begins tonight in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Kramer tells ABC Radio that he felt the anniversary “was a good excuse to tour,” adding, “I like playing music for people. It’s what I started off doing and I still enjoy doing.”

Joining Kramer on the trek are Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil, Fugazi drummer Brendan Canty, Faith No More bassist Billy Gould and singer Marcus Durant, one-time singer of the now-defunct band Zen Guerilla.

While Wayne calls Durant “our secret weapon,” he says playing with all of the musicians taking part in the tour is special for him, because each of them “have their own connection to the music of the MC5.”

He explains, “The MC5’s music was important to them at a specific point in their earlier life. So they have a relationship with the music apart from their friendship with me.”

The North American leg of the MC50 Tour includes 35 dates and runs through an October 27 show in the MC5’s hometown, Detroit.

Kramer says each show will begin with a full performance of Kick Out the Jams, “then we’ll take a little intermission and come back and play a handful of songs from the other [two MC5] albums.”

In addition, Wayne says he hopes to have guest artists “in every city come up and do their favorite MC5 songs.”

A 20-date European leg will follow the American outing. Check out full details about the trek at MC50th.com.

“If you are a rocker, Kramer declares, “come on out with us and we’re gonna raise the roof.”
