Kani Kapila Music L.L.C.Jesse Colin Young, frontman of the ’60s folk-rock group The Youngbloods, has just released a new song titled “For My Sisters” in which he expresses his support of the #MeToo movement. The track is available as a digital download and via the usual streaming services.
Young, whose old band had a top-five hit in 1969 with a cover of the famous peace anthem “Get Together,” says his wife, Connie, encouraged him to create a new tune addressing the issue while he was working on his forthcoming studio album, Dreamers.
“[She said,] ‘Before you’re done, I want you to write a song for my sisters, just to let them know that you’re listening,'” Jesse explains. “And by that she meant all her sisters in the world.”
The 76-year-old singer/songwriter adds, “Connie and I fight together for anybody who is treated unfairly — women, people of color, the LGBTQ community. We’re resisters to all the oppressors out there. So when she told me that, it was an incredible moment. I felt like I was an actor who had been sent a scene by a great director. The words came so quickly to me.”
“This is a song for my sisters, just to let you know that I’m here,” sings Young in the verse. “This is a song for resisters, and everything we hold dear.”
You can check out a lyric video for the song at Young’s official YouTube channel. The clip features Jesse and his various collaborators, including his son Tristan on bass, performing the tune in a recording studio.
“For My Sisters” is the second song Young has made available from Dreamers, following the lead single, “Shape Shifters,” which was released in early October. The album is due out next year.
