BMGPretenders frontwoman Chrissie Hynde has given fans another taste of her upcoming jazz-dub album, Valve Bone Woe, a collaboration with award-winning producers and film score composers Marius de Vries and Eldad Guetta. The new track, “Meditation on a Pair of Wire Cutters,” is a condensed rendition of an epic 1964 instrumental by legendary jazz bassist Charlie Mingus.
You can hear the hypnotic, percussion-heavy song now at Hynde’s official YouTube channel. The track also is available as a digital single and via streaming services.
As previously reported, Valve Bone Woe will be released September 6, and features 14 cover tunes, including versions of songs written and/or recorded by Brian Wilson, The Kinks‘ Ray Davies, Frank Sinatra, Hoagy Carmichael, John Coltrane, Nick Drake and Rodgers & Hammerstein. Hynde recorded the album with a musical collective called the Valve Bone Woe Ensemble.
Prior to her version of “Meditation on a Pair of Wire Cutters,” Chrissie released two other songs from the record: renditions of The Beach Boys‘ “Caroline, No” and the melancholy jazz standard “You Don’t Know What Love Is.”
Valve Bone Woe is available for pre-order now, and will be released on CD, as a two-LP vinyl set and as a vinyl box set featuring seven seven-inch discs. Various special bundles can be purchased at Hynde’s online store.
The 67-year-old Rock & Roll Hall of Famer has scheduled two special shows in support of the album with the Valve Bone Woe Ensemble — on July 6 at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles and September 14 at London’s Hyde Park. The Hollywood Bowl Orchestra also will accompany Hynde at the L.A. concert.
