Identity RecordsLast month, longtime Journey keyboardist Jonathan Cain released a new Christian music album titled More Like Jesus, a follow-up to his 2016 worship record, What God Wants to Hear, and his 2017 Christmas collection, Unsung Noel.

Cain tells ABC Radio that while the subject matter of his solo tunes focuses on praising God, the music undoubtedly shares similarities with Journey songs.

“My rock roots, you can hear a lot of it,” he explains. “All the piano motifs that I’m known for…that’s sort of in Journey, you can hear…a lot of it in this album, as well as…some of the guitar things.”

Jonathan also notes that writing songs focused on his faith is similar to composing tunes for Journey in that they both come effortlessly for him. “It just comes out of me,” he says.

One aspect of his spiritual music Cain says he’s particularly enjoying is getting to sing lead on the tracks.

“I’m learning to become a vocalist again,” he declares. “I started out in the ’70s as a singer-songwriter, so God has a sense of humor and has taken me full circle, I guess.”

Jonathan tells ABC Radio that the cornerstone of More Like Jesus is its title track, a modern-sounding tune that he says reminds his kids of the alternative rock group The 1975. Cain maintains that the most important part of the tune is its message, which he says is “what Jesus taught…tolerance, kindness, relationships, acceptance, love.”

Meanwhile, Cain reveals that he’s been working on a couple songs for a potential new Journey album.

“I’ve been gathering stuff,” he says. “I keep a notebook of all kinds of ideas, and I certainly think, when the time is right, it will happen, for sure.”
