Jethro Tull will mark the 40th anniversary of its 1979 album Stormwatch by releasing an expanded, four-CD/two-DVD version of the record on October 18.
Stormwatch: 40th Anniversary Force 10 Edition features a newly mixed version of the original album by Steven Wilson; a disc of alternate versions, outtakes from the Stormwatch sessions and other rarities; two CDs boasting an unreleased live performance recorded in the Netherlands in 1980; and two audio DVDs featuring high-quality versions of the album’s tracks and the associated recordings in various digital formats.
Originally released in September 1979, Stormwatch completed Jethro Tull’s trilogy of folk-rock albums that also included 1977’s Songs from the Wood and 1978’s Heavy Horses. The album peaked at #22 on the Billboard 200 and went on to sell more than 500,000 copies in the U.S. Stormwatch was the last album to feature four of the six members of Tull’s classic late-’70s lineup — bassist John Glascock, drummer Barriemore Barlow and keyboardists John Evan and David Palmer, who’s now known as Dee Palmer.
Stormwatch showcased songs with ecological and maritime themes, so several tracks recorded during the sessions that didn’t fit in with those themes were left off the record. Those tunes appear on the expanded reissue’s second CD.
The live discs were recorded at a March 16, 1980, show in The Hague, Netherlands. The concert featured live renditions of most of Stormwatch‘s tracks, as well as such popular Jethro Tull songs as “Aqualung,” “Heavy Horses,” “Songs from the Wood,” “Thick as a Brick,” “Cross-Eyed Mary” and “Locomotive Breath.”
