ABC/Randy Holmes; ABC/Ida Mae AstuteLast November, John Mellencamp and longtime girlfriend Meg Ryan announced that they were engaged. Now, in a new interview with InStyle, the When Harry Met Sally actress says she’s very happy being with the singer/songwriter, but she’s not in a rush to walk down the aisle.
“I’m going to get married at some point,” she tells the magazine. “But for now, this engagement thing is a state of grace.”
Ryan says that her main focus now is her kids’ happiness: She has a 27-year-old son, actor Jack Quaid, from her first marriage with Dennis Quaid, and a 14-year-old daughter, Daisy True, whom she adopted after she and Dennis divorced.
“I’m either figuring out how to provide for them, figuring out how to say it right, figuring out all those mom things,” she notes. “I want them to be happy.”
Mellencamp initially dated Ryan from 2011 through 2014, and the couple rekindled their relationship in 2017.
In a December 2018 interview with NBC’s Today show, John briefly discussed his engagement to Meg, calling her the “funniest woman I ever met.”
Mellencamp has been married three times before, most recently to fashion model Elaine Irwin, whom he divorced in 2011 after 18 years of marriage. He has five kids in all from those marriages.
Ryan’s only marriage — to Quaid — lasted from 1991 to 2001.
