Kevin Mazur/Getty ImagesThe Who will launch the next leg of their Moving On tour September 1 at New York’s Madison Square Garden — and Roger Daltrey says fans can expect to hear some new music this time around.
Speaking to Metro, Daltrey says that The Who will “do a couple” of new songs from their forthcoming album as part of their set — because the fact that they’re touring with an orchestra makes it harder to do more than that.
“The one limitation with working with an orchestra is that it’s much more difficult to change the set list,” explains Daltrey. “You have to change the whole music of the whole orchestra. You can’t juggle it up, it doesn’t work like that. They play to the dots.”
As for the album itself, Daltrey says when he first heard the new material, he thought it sounded like “a fantastic Pete Townshend solo album,” but after he put his own stamp on the songs, it’s now, as he puts it, “an incredible Who album.”
Townshend agrees, telling Metro, “At first Roger didn’t really feel comfortable with what I delivered. But he did work very hard to inhabit the songs, and his approaches in each case are surprising and unique. Not always what I expected. He has done really good work. There are some amazing vocal moments.”
So far, there’s no title or release date for the new album, but unlike many past Who albums, Pete clarifies, this time around, “There is no narrative.”
“Some listeners to the new songs have said that they can sense an underlying story,” he says. “That was never my intention.”
The next leg of the Moving On tour is scheduled to wrap up October 23 in Edmonton, AB.
