Leah SteigerSammy Hagar and his latest band, The Circle — which includes ex-Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony and drummer Jason Bonham — recently released a new album called Space Between. He tells Forbes the album is “a concept record about money, greed, enlightenment and truth” — and when it comes to the money part, Sammy is certainly speaking from experience.
Hagar tells Forbes that because he’s so rich, he’s completely free, creatively, and that’s the way he likes it.
“For the people that have made it and are in a position like myself and my band mates in the Circle…We’re so lucky to have been from that era where we sold tens of millions of records and made gazillions of dollars and get yourself in a position where now it’s just art for me,” he says.
” I love being able to do whatever I want whenever I want. I gotta tell you, I’m spoiled rotten,” he admits. “Man, I don’t know what I would do if I had to what I do for a living and they said, ‘You gotta go out and do 130 shows this year cause you’re gonna go broke, you’re gonna lose your band.’ I’m lucky and my band mates are lucky.”
Case in point: Hagar says he actually financed an entire film based on the album called Space Between: The Affirmation — even though he doesn’t plan to make any money from it.
“It was expensive and I paid for everything. This is a concept record and I wanted to make sure people understand what I’m really trying to say and I wanted to drive it home visually,” he explains.
But he admits, “There’s no market for it. I don’t know what to do with it.”
