William Snyder/TrinifoldThe Who have postponed two upcoming concerts after they cut short a show in Houston on Wednesday because front man Roger Daltrey lost his voice.
A message on the band’s official website reports that “due to illness,” concerts at American Airlines Center in Dallas tonight and Pepsi Center in Denver on Sunday, September 29, “must be postponed.”
The British rock legends are asking fans to hold on to their tickets for these shows, as well as for the Houston concert, “as they will be honored at the rescheduled dates.” Further details will be announced soon.
The Who’s official blogger, Brian Kehew, wrote a recap of the Houston show, explaining what happened with Daltrey and discussing how the band considered continuing the concert before eventually deciding to call it a night.
Several songs into the gig, after the band had played its Tommy set, Roger commented to the crowd, “It’s great to be in Texas, but didn’t expect it to be allergy week,” indicating that he was having trouble with his voice.
Roger starting singing the next song, “Who Are You,” but stopped during the first verse, letting guitarist Pete Townshend take over.
Next up was “Eminence Front,” a tune that Townshend sings, but — according to Kehew — by the end of the song, Daltrey had decided he wasn’t able to continue, and left the stage.
At this point, about 50 minutes into the concert, Townshend told the audience that the band would try to put together a show minus Daltrey but first, they’d take a break. After conferring with The Who’s manager, however, it was decided to call off the rest of the concert.
