Courtesy of AXS TVDon McLean is featured on the latest episode of the AXS TV series Mixtape, which airs tonight at 8:30 p.m. ET/5:30 p.m. PT.

As previously reported, Mixtape features various well-known music artists talking about their favorite songs of all time, and sharing their personal playlists of the tunes that shaped their lives and impacted their careers.

On the new program, McLean shares how he feels about his fans, and discusses his songwriting, and his love of Buddy Holly‘s music.

In a preview clip of the episode, McLean notes that in response to the love people have given him because of his music, “Whatever time I have left, I want to be as good to people as I can be, and do the best job I can do onstage, because that’s my calling.”

Regarding his approach to writing songs, he maintains, “My music is an effort to try to find out who I am. I don’t have any songs that are lies. All my songs are the purest part of me. I’m not perfect, I have a lot of flaws, but my songs are…the best part of me.”

The preview also includes a glimpse at McLean performing an acoustic version of his signature tune, “American Pie.”

In conjunction with the episode, McLean created a playlist of their favorite songs that can be accessed on popular streaming-music service Spotify. Among the tunes are pop, folk and doo-wop gems that pre-date 1960, as well as several of his own popular songs. He also has chosen Elvis Presley‘s cover of his romantic ballad “And I Love Her So” for the list.
